Bute House prides itself on its happy and relaxed atmosphere, with few rules and an ethos whereby respect and consideration form the basis for all we do.

We aim to provide a stimulating, friendly and caring environment in which each child is valued as an individual and encouraged to develop her talents, gradually gaining confidence, self-respect and independence. This enables her to progress to the next stage of her education with a good self-image and a positive, confident and enthusiastic approach. In addition, girls are encouraged to develop a caring, considerate and respectful attitude towards one another, recognising that each member of the community, irrespective of age or ability, has an important part to play in promoting the well-being of its members.

Much of the pastoral care system at Bute House is informal and unwritten, but it is understood by all that every member of staff is fully involved in the welfare and happiness of every child in the school. However, it is primarily the responsibility of the class teacher to ensure the general well-being of each girl in her/his care, in all aspects of school life, including the development of social values and a high standard of behaviour and manners. The girls also recognise that any adult to whom they turn in times of trouble will do what she/he can to help and will then inform the class teacher. There should be discussion between class teachers, tutors, subject teachers and assistants on any pastoral matters.

In Year 6, as well as having a form teacher the girls' are allocated a tutor. The tutor is there to encourage, reassure, congratulate and guide their tutee about moving on to Senior school, friendships and their future. They are also given the chance to tell the tutor of successes in and out of school as well as any worries they may have.
