Science Laboratory PDF Print E-mail
Bute House has an extremely well equipped science laboratory and preparatory room which allows us to carry out a wide variety of exciting experiments. Girls in Year 3 have one practical session in the lab per week and one double lesson on their Science projects in their classrooms. Years 4, 5 and 6 have two double lessons in the lab and carry out relevant experiments at every possible opportunity. The girls learn many practical skills, for example using candles and Bunsen burners to heat things; separating mixtures by filtering, evaporating and distilling,  constructing electrical circuits, using thermometers, growing seeds, using microscopes, using indicators when studying acids and alkalis and dissecting. We have a big collection of animal and plant specimens, fossils and rocks. The girls are encouraged to bring anything of scientific interest from home to display in the lab, which gives us a permanent exhibition of curiosities of which they are very proud. We learn a lot and have great fun!
