Year 6 at Bute House is our "senior" year and as such involves a lot of hard work, but also a lot of fun!  The year group is divided into three forms of 20 girls, with form teachers who will be responsible for registration and administration tasks as well as looking after the well-being of the girls in the form throughout the year. When the girls come into Year 6 in September they are also assigned a tutor who will act as mentor and interested adult for the year. It will be the tutor who will help her tutee prepare for interviews and will generally support her during the year and especially over the examination period.

The Autumn term is, of course, the term for preparation for the 11+ examinations which are held in January. The examinable subjects are English, Mathematics and in certain cases, Science. Other subjects that are taught in Year 6 are History, Geography, RE, Latin, French, ICT, Art and Design Technology, Music, Drama and Dance, Citizenship and Games. All subjects in Year 6 are taught by specialist teachers. The girls are able to represent the school in a number of sports such as swimming, netball, tennis, gymnastics and pop lacrosse.

The School Council gives many girls the opportunity to show their leadership abilities. The Chairlady and three executive members are voted onto the Council from Year 6 and represent the school pupil body where necessary.

Every year the Year 6 girls look forward to their Drama production staged by the specialist Drama teacher. Every girl has a speaking role in the play and much is learnt in the way of teamwork and give and take!

A highlight of the year 6 calendar is certainly the trip to Devon at the beginning of July. This trip to Skern Lodge incorporates Geography and Biology field work and much fun is had by all. Tasks include following a river from source to mouth, climbing sand dunes, spotting the flowers of the area and walking on Exmoor. Other activities include watching birds of prey, listening to stories and eating, eating, eating!

The final function for all Year 6 girls is the farewell disco held in the school hall. Girls dress up and dance the afternoon away having enjoyed a tea prepared by the kitchen staff. Much fun is had by all.

Year 6 is a very special year and friendships made here appear to last a very long time and it is always a thrill to welcome back our "old girls" to the school.
